Progressing Safety and Health: OSH Orientation for Carabao Farmers and Raisers in Leon, Iloilo

The Regional Extension Unit No. 6 of the Occupational Safety and Health Center (OSHC) organized a learning and appreciation session on safety and health for carabao farmers and raisers. The session was designed to enhance the well-being of the members of the Leon CONFED Farmers and Dairy Association (LECOFAFA) and received favorable feedback from its participants.

Engaging in agricultural activities, such as carabao farming, exposes farmers to various dangers that can impact their well-being, health, and efficiency. Recognizing these hazards is essential for the successful implementation of safety and health protocols.

The orientation session emphasized vital information and recommended methods to ensure safety and well-being while farmers and raisers look after and oversee their carabaos, which are the key assets of their community-driven business. The agenda covered fundamental concepts of occupational safety and health (OSH), potential hazards related to carabao farming, ways to enhance farmers' health, emergency readiness tactics, and optimal farming techniques. These topics were addressed through interactive conversations, role-playing exercises, and practical demonstrations.

One of the key highlights was the emphasis on the prevention of common zoonotic diseases, as well as awareness on exposure to chemical hazards and their control, proper handling techniques to avoid injuries during farming activities, addressing repetitive strain and improper posture, and mental health promotional activities. The session also covered the importance of maintaining a safe and hygienic environment, both for the farmer and the carabao.

During the informative session, a significant focus was placed on the prevention of common zoonotic diseases, which are illnesses that can be transmitted between animals and humans. This emphasis underscores the importance of safeguarding both human and animal health through proactive measures. Additionally, the discussion delved into raising awareness about exposure to chemical hazards and strategies for effectively controlling them to minimize risks in agricultural settings. Proper handling techniques were highlighted as essential to prevent injuries that can occur during farming activities, emphasizing the importance of safety protocols and equipment. The session also addressed the significance of mitigating repetitive strain injuries and maintaining proper posture to enhance the well-being of farmers.

Furthermore, mental health promotional activities were underscored as a crucial component of overall well-being in the agricultural sector. By acknowledging and addressing the mental health challenges faced by farmers, the session aimed to promote a holistic approach to health and wellness. Creating a supportive environment that prioritizes mental health can contribute to the resilience and sustainable productivity of individuals involved in agriculture.

Lastly, the session underscored the importance of maintaining a safe and hygienic environment for both farmers and their carabaos. By emphasizing cleanliness and hygiene practices, the session aimed to reduce the risk of infections and ensure the well-being of all involved. This holistic approach to health and safety in agriculture serves to promote a sustainable and thriving farming community.

The Taytay Sa Kauswagan Inc. (TSKI), a microfinance non-government organization, backed the event as it acknowledged the significance of equipping farmers with the necessary knowledge and tools to improve their productivity and secure the sustainability of their livelihoods.

"We are committed to providing our farmers with the necessary skills and knowledge to protect their health on the fields. This collaborative event is a step towards ensuring a safer and more prosperous future for our agricultural community," said Melveen M. Melocoton, OSHC-REU VI Manager.

The event ended with a public discussion where farmers raised questions and requested guidance regarding the particular difficulties they encountered in their everyday farming tasks. Mr. Perlito Echeche, President of LECOFADA, expressed profound gratitude to the OSHC and TSKI for offering his members useful knowledge and hands-on advice for their daily farm work alongside their trusted companion, the carabao. The farmers eagerly anticipate further projects in the times ahead.

The Leon CONFED Farmers and Dairy Association (LECOFAFA) is a community-centered organization focused on processing and enhancing carabao milk. The community's supplementary feeding initiative aims to incorporate milk production as part of the effort to combat malnutrition. With support from OSHC, TSKI, and other organizations, LECOFADA is making strides in standardizing processed milk and meeting essential regulations.
