Barangay officials are newly certified safety officers

ILOILO, WESTERN VISAYAS – Overall, 47 barangay officials in Iloilo City completed the free face-to-face 10-hr Basic Occupational Safety and Health (BOSH) Training for Safety Officers 1 conducted last March 15, 2023, at the GBP Institute for Energy, Brgy. Ingore, Lapaz, Iloilo City. The event was in coordination with Global Business Power (GBP) as one of their corporate social responsibility activities in strengthening the advocacy of safety and health in their adopted barangays.

Since the release of the CSC-DOH-DOLE Joint Memorandum Circular No. 1, series of 2020, otherwise known as the OSH Standards for the Public Sector, the OSHC-Region 6 expanded its efforts in providing specific safety training schedules for government agencies to guide their appointed safety officers in developing their OSH policies and programs toward reasonable working conditions.

The circular covers the National Government Agencies (NGAs), State Universities and Colleges (SUCs), Local Government Units (LGUs), and Government-Owned or Controlled Corporations (GOCCs) with original charters. The circular also states that the safety and health officer, who attended the OSH training, will act as the focal person of the agency in the implementation of programs to eliminate hazards in the workplace and to correct or amend risky or unsafe work practices. They will serve as the secretary of the Safety and Health Committee, report the occurrence of accidents, and coordinate all safety and health training.

“We are going deeper to the grassroots of our bureaucracy to sow the seeds for a safe and healthy culture in the country,” said OSHC Region 6 OIC, Melveen M. Melocoton.

“We will reach out to more government agencies and conduct both face-to-face and virtual safety officer training schedules so that every public office in the country will have a certified safety officer,” he added.
