WESTERN VISAYAS - A total of forty personnel from the laboratory and faculty of John B. Lacson Maritime Foundation University – Molo Campus engaged in the service of the Occupational Safety and Health Center – Region 6’s for the provision of occupational safety and health (OSH) awareness.
“With the hope that with this seminar on occupational safety and health, the laboratory areas, as well as our services section, will be able to review and update their internal policies, procedures, and guidelines to ensure that our work environments have safety precautions in place to prevent injuries and to limit both short term and long term hazards that could lead to physical and mental illness now and in the future,” said Dr. Edmundo Q. Pragados, QA Manager of JBLMFU-Molo.
“After the seminar, You will come out as our strongest advocates for promoting occupational safety and health in the workplace,” he added.
The OSH awareness provided a venue for the attendees to empower their rights on OSH and update themselves on the national OSH data and legislation. Work-related accidents and illnesses significantly impact productivity, especially in the academe. If a worker gets into an accident, they will be unable to do their assigned tasks.
“All establishments must comply with RA 11058 and its IRR – DOLE Department Order 198 and the OSH Standards,” stated OSHC-Region 6 OIC, Melveen M. Melocoton.
During the discussion, attendees grasped the physiology of accidents and work-related illnesses. Before the reality of an accident or illness at work, unsafe and unhealthy acts and conditions already existed. These situations were waiting for an opportunity to impact the organization adversely. Thus, proper awareness and motivation are essential to correct them and avoid developing into a loss.
“All hands on deck for employers, workers, safety officers, and OSH committee members have roles to play to ensure the effective implementation of their OSH programs,” he further emphasized.
The OSHC-Region 6 commits to creating and raising awareness, understanding, and passion for OSH among the citizens. Moreover, the regional unit operates to increase the recognition and respect for OSH as essential to the productivity & sustainability of enterprises in Western Visayas.
