Boracay Island's Small Business Sector Embraces a Culture of Safety and Health


BORACAY ISLAND, October 27, 2023 – Boracay Island, renowned for its pristine beaches and vibrant tourism sector, has long been a sought-after destination for travelers from all corners of the globe. The heart of this paradise is its dedicated and hardworking local workforce, many of whom are employed in micro and small establishments (MSEs) that cater to the diverse needs of guests. In recognition of the pivotal role played by these businesses, the OSHC-REU VI conducted a Basic Occupational Safety and Health (BOSH) Training for Safety Officer 1 (SO1), at the Faith Village Gardens with a total of 40 newly certified SO1 composed of employers and employees from various MSEs. This initiative seeks to instill a culture of safety and well-being among employees and employers alike.


OSHC REU VI OIC Melveen M. Melocoton highlighted that the safety and health of workers are perpetual rights, thus non-negotiable. “We have the right to a safe and healthy workplace. As certified safety officers, we are the internal consultants of our employers in dialogues regarding OSH,” he stressed. “Our island's reputation as a world-class destination depends on the safety and health of our workers. We are committed to ensuring that Boracay remains a safe and healthy place for both our workers and guests," he added.


Senior Labor Employment Officer Engr. Amador O. Tajanglangit III speaking on the importance of this initiative, commented, "This is a big step in promoting a safe and healthy environment in your workplace. Your employees will be happy that they are working in a secure environment resulting in productivity and better outputs.”


The newly certified safety officers were capacitated in developing their company’s safety and health program. They were trained in conducting risk assessments in their respective establishments. And, assisted in developing a workplace-specific OSH re-entry plan.


In conclusion, the renewed focus on workplace safety and health as a culture in MSEs on Boracay Island is a testament to the commitment of its employers and employees to creating a safe and sustainable paradise. With a combined effort from the government, business owners, and employees, Boracay will continue to thrive while prioritizing the health and safety of all its workers. // MM
